66) จงเป็นใหญ่ด้วยบุญ
คนเราจะทำอะไร ต้องนึกถึงฐานะตัวเอง ดูบุญของตัวเอง ต้องดูทุนเก่าที่เราทำมา จะทำอะไรอย่าให้เกินฐานะ ทำให้พอเหมาะพอสมกัน จึงจะควร ถ้าอยากเป็นใหญ่ ต้องใหญ่ด้วยบุญอย่าเป็นใหญ่ด้วยกิเลส ถ้าใหญ่ด้วยบุญ ถึงจะเป็นใหญ่ได้อย่างแท้จริง แต่ถ้าเป็นใหญ่ด้วยกิเลสจะต้องหกคะเมนตกลงมา เสียท่าเสียทีไปเลย เรื่องนี้ก็เป็นกันมาก
ดูอย่างพระเทวทัต เป็นต้น พอทำอะไรได้สักหน่อยหนึ่ง ก็อยากดังอยากเด่น โดยไม่ดูพื้นฐานของตัวเองว่า สร้างพื้นฐานความดีมามาก น้อยแค่ไหน มองดูแค่ปลายเหตุนิดเดียว เหมือนกับการสร้างบ้านที่พื้นฐานไม่ดี พื้นฐานทำไว้แค่นิดหน่อย แต่พอสร้างบ้านไปแล้วอยากได้ใหญ่ ๆ โต ๆ ในที่สุดบ้านนั้นก็มีแต่พังอย่างเดียว
จะเอาอย่างยายเดี๋ยวนี้ได้อย่างไร เพราะเขาไม่รู้ว่า ยายอดทนมามาก ทำความดีไว้ในอดีตมากมาย จนความดีเป็นภูเขา ที่ยายได้ดีมีชื่อเสียง มีลูกศิษย์ลูกหามากมาย ก็เพราะความดีที่สร้างไว้ในอดีต

66. POWER THROUGH MERIT
Whatever we set out to accomplish in life, we must examine our personal condition as well as the condition of our merit-the “spiritual capital” that we have built. We should attempt things that are within our current ability and we will accomplish.
Don’t exceed your limit. If you desire greatness, achieve your greatness through merit, not through unwholesome actions or defilements20. Achievements of greatness through the power of merit are genuine achievements, but greatness achieved through defilements will eventually collapse.
Look at Devadatta21 as an example. He achieved only a little success but became disillusioned with himself and wanted to be famous. He did so without looking at whether he had built up enough foundation of goodness to deserve it. This resulted in his demise.
It is like building a house on a flimsy foundation. If you build the house bigger than the foundation can support, the result is predictable, the house will collapse.
If you wonder how I have accomplished all that I have, I will tell you that it is due to the great amount of merits I have accumulated and is also due to my insurmountable patience. The reason I became famous with so many followers is due to the virtues that I have made and built up in the past.

21Devadatta was a cousin and disciple of the Buddha who created a schism in the monastic order. Due to jealousy and thirst for power, he attempted to murder the Buddha. Devadatta became a symbol of a bad monk.
因修过的功德而伟大
我们为人做事，要考虑到自己的身份和资格，要看 自己以前修过的功德。做任何事，都要懂得守本分而不 过分，知道什么时候该适可而止。
如果要有伟大的功绩，就要因自己修过的功德而感到 伟大，绝不是由自己世俗的烦恼欲望所获得的不凡成就。
如果因功德的功绩而伟大，那才是真正的伟大。相 反的，如果因烦恼欲望而期望有不凡成就的，必会跌倒 下来，而且会跌得头破血流。这种例子很多，提婆达多 比丘便是一个很好的例子。
如果因为做了一点小事就想出名，想出风头，无视于 自己修过的功德，那么无论曾建造过的善良有多深厚。 所看到的，也只是那么丁点儿的成果，如果是没打稳打 牢的地基。就单凭那薄薄的基层，就想建起高大豪华的 房子，岂有不倒之理？
怎能轻易地去模仿奶奶呢？他们不知道奶奶历经过 多少风霜，练就了多大的能耐，做过多少善事，修过多 少功德，以致功德如山般的壮伟。
奶奶之所以能享有今日之荣誉，拥有众多的弟子， 皆因过去所修过的功德。
